How to Love a Jerk

How do you love a jerk?

You either do or you don’t. There are no tips or tricks for loving a jerk.

It’s that simple.

When we love assholes, jerks, mean people, idiots, or anyone else we don’t naturally and easily love, we have to do so unreasonably–literally without reason.

This is challenging for me, as I often find loving jerks pointless.

However, the more I make contact with God, the more I remember that love is it. It’s the final resting spot. It’s home.

So we love, or we don’t love.

It’s up to us.

In love and liminality,

Annie Rose

  1. Oh no, does this mean I’m bad if I don’t love jerks? Or maybe I do love, I’m just blinded by my frustration and anger by jerks. So blinded, I do see the love or feel the love until distance has past, hearts have healed. Hmmm…good thing to ponder. I like your remembering God.

    • If you’re bad, I’m bad too. Maybe we can love jerks and still be angry or frustrated. And maybe we can love jerks and still say “no thank you” to contact, companionship, or friendship. I think that love is an inner quality and a place to stand. How we express it externally may differ depending on the person. I too tend to not love until enough time, distance, and healing have passed, but why bother not loving until then? I love you! (And thank you for not being a jerk and making it so EASY for me to love you!)
